Veloqx is a real-estate development and investment company based in Hong Kong that constructs architecturally unique and futuristic buildings in popular areas of Tokyo. When Empire Japan was asked to design the celebration and grand opening of Veloqx’s newest building, The Ice Cubes, located in the fashionable shopping district of Harajuku and where the popular brand H&M calls home, Empire aspired to create bold visuals inspired by the building’s unique architecture.

Empire designed the party space with an icy cold atmosphere by using materials and lighting that gave the impression of a futuristic ice palace. By carefully choosing the white interior materials along with fresh ice blue lighting, the space provided the guests a chilling experience. The exterior lighting cascaded all the way up to the 9th floor of the building complimenting the architecture perfectly and creating a magnificent icy citadel highlighted by the Tokyo skyline. Through Empire’s original lighting design, the building was immediately transformed into a new landmark of Harajuku.

High-profile guests of the grand opening including the chairpersons and presidents from the top financial and real-estate companies in Asia were treated to a solo performance by a well-known Japanese violinist. A local DJ provided the icy cool soundtrack for the evening’s reception and lounge party.Empire was responsible for creating the overall concept, event design, interior and exterior lighting, talent booking, catering and bar service coordination with Japan’s top culinary brands, scripting, and full production of the event. Empire’s production of The Ice Cubes’ official opening coincided with H&M’s opening of their Harajuku store, requiring logistical coordination between the two clients.

Marco Tempest performs his next generation magic at the Apple Store in Tokyo's Ginza. Marco Tempest stunned visitors to Apple's Ginza store in Tokyo Japan with his breakthrough combination of technology and magic. Located in the middle of Tokyo's posh Ginza shopping district, on some of the world's most expensive real estate, the Apple Store is a high-profile location always buzzing with activity. Marco, visiting Japan to produce a new TV special, was invited to perform at the Apple Store during its peak December sales season. Despite short notice Marco drew an excited and diverse crowd of shoppers, families, tourists and Apple fans. Entitled "Multimedia Magic Made on a Mac", Marco's performance not only showcased his world-renowned and innovative routines, but it also demonstrated his ability to use Mac products to produce magic.

Using Wi Fi technology, integration between various products ranging from cell phones with cameras to computers to LCD screens, Marco proved once again that he is the future of magic. Under the watchful eye of the audience, Marco solved in less than 5 seconds one of the most popular (and difficult) puzzles in the world - The Rubik's Cube! Marco then asked a random audience member to imagine they were holding a card, and took a photo of them with his cell phone. After placing the cell phone face down in the hand of the subject, they were asked to reveal the card they imagined they were holding. They were then asked to look at the image on the cell phone, and were understandable amazed to see a photo of them holding the actual card that they had only imagined holding moments ago!

The Apple Store management was understandably thrilled with Marco's performance, and is looking forward to future visits to Japan when he will perform at their store again. Marco Tempest continues to blur the line between magic and technology, making Arthur C. Clarkes famous words, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic," ring truer then ever.

Marco Tempest stars in NHK broadcast Japanese Television Special, "The Astounding World of Virtual Magic!" NHK, Japan's national broadcaster, was looking for outstanding content for a prime-time slot in their year-end schedule. They chose to partner with Empire Entertainment Japan to produce a unique television special starring Marco Tempest. Working together with NHK, Marco Tempest and Empire Entertainment developed a program packed with both Marco's world-renowned illusions customized for Japan and entirely original content. Marco Tempest filmed in the studio and on location in Tokyo for 4 days to produce the 70-minute show. Famous Japanese personalities, Jay Kabira, Riho Makise, Michiko Shimizu and the duo Napoleons, joined Marco in the studio, and were treated to an up-close and personal display of Virtual Magic. Locations such as a retail store in Akihabara – also known as Electric Town, a video arcade in Shibuya - the capital of Japanese youth fashion, and a pool & darts bar in Roppongi – the center of Tokyo's nightlife, provided a perfect background to Marco's original blend of hi-technology and illusions.

In one illusion in Electric Town Marco thrilled shoppers by changing part of the live picture on a random screen with just the touch of his finger. But the magic didn't stop there. Marco then pulled a small doll out of one TV in a bank of plasma screens airing the same show. The impromptu audience was shocked to discover that the doll, which had disappeared from the screen Marco plucked it from, was still pictured in all of the other TVs! The program was filmed and broadcast in ultra clear hi-definition, and aired for the first time during prime time on December 27. It earned an average rating of nearly 10 points, and was watched by almost 13 million people during its 70 minute broadcast. E-mails and phone calls received from viewers following the broadcast showed that many were left baffled, and Marco had single-handedly made people believe in magic again! NHK was delighted with the result, and are already in talks with Marco for new specials for 2006.

Marco continues to be a master at walking the line between the actual world we live in, and the virtual one that exists in our amazing technology and imaginations. As the creative force and production designer behind all of his work, Marco is a producer and event planner's dream. Empire Entertainment is pleased to have played a role in the development of Marco Tempest's NHK Special, and to continue to support an ever-growing field of original ventures in television and film. About NHK: The Nippon Hyoso Kyokai (NHK) dates from the early 1920s with establishment of a license fee-based national radio broadcaster. In contrast to many overseas public broadcasters, NHK is still one of the most watched channels in Japan, enjoying substantial market share across a wide demographic. The NHK group operates 54 stations throughout Japan and has 29 overseas bureaus. In 1953, after making Japan's first television broadcast, NHK introduced commercial broadcasting to Japan.

When this Major Financial Services Company sought to create a special evening for approximately 200 VIP guests attending the firm's 2nd annual Investors Conference in Japan, it called on Empire Entertainment's Tokyo office to help it create a dinner reception for it's mainly non-Japanese guests. The client's directives were that the dinner be both unique and memorable and that it effectively fuse both Eastern and Western influences, a major theme the conference.Working to the client's brief, Empire quickly outlined and began producing an extraordinary event. Empire was able to secure space at the Mitsui Club in Tokyo, a grand historical facility originally built and owned by the powerful Mitsui family of Japan. The building is now an exclusive members-only club. The club and its grounds are perhaps one of the earliest examples of East/West fusion in architecture in Japan. Built during the Meiji era, under the direction of renowned British Architect Josiah Conder, the compound consists of a large western style main hall located just inside the front gate, leading to a large 4.9 acre Japanese Garden accessible from the back terrace of the main hall. The fusion theme continued through the rest of the evening as guests were treated to a combination of Japanese and International cuisine and live dinner entertainment which successfully fused various western and eastern artistic and cultural elements in interesting and non-conventional ways.

The evening's entertainment opened and closed with energetic sword fighting performances by a group who are known for their work choreographing the fight scenes in Quentin Tarantino's motion picture Kill Bill, Vol. 1 and playing the Crazy 88 characters in the movie. The guests were also treated to a unique dance performance, during the mid point intermission, by an accomplished Japanese tap dancer tapping to the sounds of a traditional Japanese Biwa string musician. The heart of the evening's entertainment though was a live painting exhibition by talented calligrapher-painter, Toun Kobayashi, who created impromptu a large Japanese landscape painting covering the length and height of the main stage. Kobayashi sensei was assisted throughout his performance by the inspirational sounds of a musical fusion ensemble consisting of an Australian didgeridoo musician and traditional Japanese musicians playing the shamisen and the Shakuhachi flute. By the end of the program, Kobayshi sensei's performance finally culminated in a striking work of art that was traditional in its style, but also relevant to the client and the guests attending the evening's event.

The event was a huge success, thoroughly enjoyed by both the client and the guests. The only regret was that the evening had to end - at least the scripted part of the program. As those who are familiar with Tokyo know, the evening rarely ends with only one party. So Empire's staff stayed to help each guest to secure transportation and give directions to get to their next stop for the evening. Empire Entertainment's Asia-Pacific office, located in Tokyo Japan, enables Empire to better serve the needs of its clients in Japan and Asia. Empire Entertainment Japan adds to Empire's international reach by providing a high level of local expertise and on the ground support for its clients in the Asia Pacific region.

Whether you are a Japanese or Asian client planning an event locally within the region, whether you are a Japanese or Asian client planning an event somewhere else in the world, or whether you are an international organization from another region planning an event in Asia-Pacific, Empire Entertainment Japan is the ideal, full-service event production and entertainment booking partner for events in the Asia-Pacific region and throughout the world.

When Huis Ten Bosch, a European style resort located in Nagasaki Japan, needed to find a great central attraction for their Autumn Festival they turned to Empire Japan to deliver contents that were unique to Europe. The client wanted to emphasize the fact that new and exciting things were happening at Huis Ten Bosch, while remaining true to the European romantic theme of the resort. It was important that the attraction generate interest from the media and result in significant PR exposure for the park. It was also important that word-of-mouth be generated from park guests themselves. To meet these challenges Empire Entertainment's Japan office identified Master Painter Kurt Wenner as the answer to Huis Ten Bosch's needs.

Working with Empire and Dentsu, Huis Ten Bosch's agency, Kurt developed ideas for two separate street paintings based on the theme of metamorphosis. He also allowed for the integration of Huis Ten Bosch's Autumn Harvest Festival into the context of the pieces. Both designs prominently featured Huis Ten Bosch's name, allowing for maximum PR and word of mouth exposure (through both PR and guest photos). Kurt's ability to combine extraordinary drawing talent with a perspective technique virtually lost in today's creative process created large scale one of a kind works that dazzled park visitors.Kurt Wenner's works utilize a Baroque era painting technique called Anamorphism. Wenner's unique and innovative use of anamorphic perspective creates unforgettable images that combine the painted surface with its surroundings into a single composition that appears 3-dimensional.Kurt's first work for Huis Ten Bosch, "The Banquet of Circe," was inspired by Homer's Odyssey. The painting features a scene where the sorceress Circe offers a bountiful harvest to the hungry companions of Ulysses, but the magical food transforms them into animals.Kurt's second work "The Triumph of Puck" was inspired by Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and features Puck, having transformed the farmer "Bottom" into a donkey as the sprites harvest grapes, pumpkins, chestnuts, and mushrooms in the foreground. These paintings were both executed on the floor's flat surface using Kurt's hand made pastel chalks. They represent the first street paintings Kurt has ever created in Japan, and were tremendously well received by Huis Ten Bosch, the media and the park guests.

Four television stations visited the park and filmed Kurt's work in progress, with a total of over twenty minutes of on-air coverage (ten minutes of that being a live broadcast from the park). Five newspapers also covered the event, publishing articles with images of Kurt's artwork.Huis Ten Bosch was thrilled with both the artistic and PR results of the project, and has expressed interest in inviting Kurt back to Japan in 2005 to create new works. For this event Empire identified and contracted the artist, was responsible for all production logistics associated with the performance, and performed as the on-site producer.

Dentsu and Dentsu Tec needed to produce a major press event in Tokyo for their client, a leading manufacturer of electronics products. They chose to partner with Empire Entertainment through its newly formed Asian arm to identify, book, and produce a world-class talent for their event. The press conference event was held to introduce the client's new line of flat panel LCD and Plasma televisions - most of which are high-definition. Dentsu and Dentsu Tec determined that it was important that the talent be both energetic and beautiful in order to wow the live audience. It was equally important that the act successfully demonstrate the new televisions' ability to accurately represent the brilliance of color, and also the very spirit of the performance.

Dentsu and Dentsu Tec's plan was to film the act in high-definition in advance of the actual press conference. During the press conference the pre-recorded and edited film would be shown on the new screens. As the pre-recorded sequence came to a close, a massive curtain on the side of the hall would be opened, and the actual performers would be revealed. The artists would then go on to perform a couple of numbers. For this demanding and exciting project, Empire identified the world-renowned Argentine Tango ensemble, Forever Tango, whose show is currently appearing on Broadway, as a perfect fit. The raw energy of Forever Tango's dances, coupled with the beautiful costumes and engaging live music was the ideal subject for this project.Forever Tango delivered 4 dancers and an accompanying band of five musicians(Cello, Violin, Piano, Bass and the Bandoneon) who performed in front of approximately 200 journalists at the popular Tokyo nightclub Ageha.

The event was a great success, and we at Empire are proud to share in the praise Dentsu and Dentsu Tec received from their client. For this event Empire contracted the artists, was responsible for all production logistics associated with the performance, and performed as the on-site producer.Empire Entertainment's new office in Tokyo Japan now enables Empire to better serve it's wide existing base of Japan-based clientele and also to better service the needs of our other clients throughout the world for projects in Japan and elsewhere in Asia.

Two weeks prior to his 40th birthday, Empire Entertainment was asked to secure the entertainment, sound and lights for an elegant club event designed by Colin Cowie at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington, DC for basketball superstar and American icon Michael Jordan's 40th birthday party. Empire Entertainment had the challenge of finding the appropriate dance band and current club DJ while providing suitable sound and lighting to fit not only within a pre-approved budget, but within the fabulous Colin Cowie décor plans. As with every event on this scale, sound and lighting must be the finest quality and appear seamless within the structure of the décor scheme, which in this case was a three level "club" created using the three ballrooms largest ballrooms in the lower level of the Ritz-Carlton. Sound and lighting, for the entertainment and décor, was set up three days prior to the event making it possible to hide virtually every single cable and speaker. Even the front of house console was invisible to the guests.

For the entertainment, Empire Entertainment selected perhaps the most exciting dance band available in the 11 piece Eturnity Band, featuring former James Brown drummer Tony Alston, and radio personality and club DJ Funk Master Flex. Empire Entertainment handled all aspects of the evening's production, including talent and stage management, coordination with the transition from cocktails to a "reveal" of a hidden dance section. The party, dubbed "Club Michael", was one of the most memorable events we've ever been a part of.

For a client dinner event held for a high level Japanese and American audience at the Four Seasons Chinzan-So in Tokyo, Empire conceptualized, designed and produced a series of traditional Japanese entertainment vignettes that were performed between courses. The evening's 'Four Seasons' theme featured live entertainment, Ikebana (floral arrangements) and stage design that symbolized each of Japan's seasons. The Autumn segment featured Taiko drummers & dancers performing before an arrangement of harvest foliage. The Winter segment featured an ensemble of Koto & Shakuhachi, a dance by a solo performer in a sea of fog and a giant brush stroke painting backdrop that was created live by renowned suiboku-ga artist Tohun Kobayashi. The Spring vignette celebrated the cherry blossom (Sakura) festival and featured female dancers dressed in furisode kimono performing a traditional dance with fans & cherry blossom boughs. The Summer piece was based on the fireworks festivals that are held each Summer throughout Japan. This finale included a fiber optic simulation of fireflies, singing children with glowing lanterns, the renowned Tokyo Dagekidan Taiko Drum Troupe and a team of dancer / acrobats. The breathtaking performance concluded with simulated fireworks and a standing ovation.

Webby Awards

Empire is honored to have produced the 28th Annual Webby Awards at Cipriani Wall Street in NYC for the 20th consecutive year. Clips from the show are available to view here.

Empire booked Amber Ruffin (from The Amber Ruffin Show on Peacock & Late Night with Seth Meyers) to host and she kicked off the show with a tech-savvy monologue

As always, the Webbys honored a variety of the internet’s best including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Keke Palmer, Shannon Sharpe, Laverne Cox, Kara Swisher and many more. The Webbys are the Internet’s highest honor, and the show is renowned for allowing winners just 5 words for their acceptance speeches. Nevertheless, this year’s winners showed that 5 words is sometimes all you need.

After a roaring round of applause for Lifetime Achievement Award winner Kara Swisher, she took the stage to put on her famous aviator sunglasses and used her 5 words to confidently say “I Ain’t Done, Tech Bros”. And after winning Podcast of the Year for her “Wiser Than Me”, Julia Louis-Dreyfus got her point across with “Listen to old women, MOTHERFU#*ERS!!!”

The show also included poignant moments highlighting how the internet helped bring greater attention and continued dialogue to Women’s Reproductive Rights with a featured moment on Plan C, before Meena Harris presenting an award to Tracy Droz Tragos & Francine Coeytaux.

Following the show, attendees headed uptown to Marquee for the highly anticipated afterparty where Empire presented Natasha Diggs and Bad Colours to spin and keep the dance floor packed.

Empire produced nearly all aspects of the event from the Red Carpet, the show itself and the Afterparty. Partners this year included David Korins Design who led on all things design and Sunshine Sachs who worked to create a buzzy Red Carpet & Media Room.

Empire is honored to have been chosen to produce every live Webby Awards event since 2005, and we consider the Webby Awards team part of the Empire family.

Everyone loves a villain, including Empire, who was tapped by E! to produce the premiere party for their new reality competition seriesHouse of Villains. The new hit show, hosted by Joel McHale, brings together 10 of the most iconic villains in reality TV history to live in a mansion, while out-scheming each other through a series of challenges in order to win a cash prize and the title of “America’s Ultimate Supervillain."

Held in the West Hollywood restaurant Ysabel, the premiere party was attended by HOV cast, and dozens of social media influencers and press.

To maximize social media buzz,House of Villains show branding was seamlessly integrated throughout all of Ysabel, creating infinite instagrammable moments from the giant 8-ft snake-entwisted E! at entry, to the large projection over the 20-ft Step & Repeat, the vinyl-wrapped and plushed-out lounge steps, and the devil horn mirror clings in the bathroom.

Further amplifying HOV’s social spread, guests could step into either of 2 stylish, custom video activations where they could “Be the Villain,” accompanied by a menagerie of props representing the infamous cast (e.g. Fairplay’s RIP GRANDMA tombstone),or let everyone “Pick Their Villain Inspo,” while posturing for the camera amidst cast voice-overs like Bobby Lytes' line,“I’m going to be flat out honest.I AM a villain. But I’m a FUN villain.”

In between sips of specialty cocktails aptly dubbed “The Bad Apple” and “The Supervillain,” guests noshed on Ysabel’s delicious Contemporary American fare which included wagyu beef skewers, fried chicken sliders, and mushroom risotto. DJ Dazzler kept the energy high with her music stylings, and mixologists from Magic & Cocktails added plenty of flair in the form of smoke bubbles and fire effects while doling out drinks at the bars.

The theme for the 78th annual United Nations General Assembly was “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all.”

To reflect this theme and to answer the urgent need to put the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) back on track, a bold initiative took shape to create a purpose-built SDG Pavilion, on the grounds of the United Nations during UN General Assembly week to serve as a forum for programming to bring together world leaders, business decision makers, NGOs, celebrities and advocates to advance the goals.

The custom-built venue featured a large tent structure, encased by an interactive scenic installation by world-renowned designer Es Devlin, that represented the 17 SDGs. Each 16’ tall monolith represented one of the SDGs and contained a multimedia exhibit from different cultural collaborators that spoke to the Goals, from zero hunger and quality education to responsible consumption and production and sustainable cities and communities.

The Pavilion interior transported guests into a forest with over 100 living trees and plants. All fauna species were indigenous to New York and found a second life after the Pavilion with the New York Restoration Project, a local organization whose mission is to work collaboratively with communities across the five boroughs to renovate gardens, restore parks and plant trees to transform the city’s landscape.

Programming at the Pavilion kicked off with a Half Time Show, a nod to reaching the halfway mark of the 2030 deadline initially set by the UN General Assembly in 2015 to achieved the SDGs. The Halftime Show commenced with a performance by Brooklyn United, a local youth music and arts program, and featured speakers such as Orlando Bloom, Sabrina Dhowre Elba, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Richard Curtis and more. The evening ended on a high note with musical performances by Grammy Award winning artists Yo-Yo Ma and Angelique Kidjo.

Throughout High Level Week, there were over 15 unique programming sessions at the SDG Pavilion including a Women’s Rise lunch which hosted guests such as actress Natalie Portman, Queen Rania of Jordan, designer Diane von Fürstenberg and Queen Mathilde of Belgium. Invitees listened to a conversation onstage between former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and philanthropist Melinda Gates before enjoying lunch. Other program highlights include the SDG Advocates Meeting with Secretary General António Guterres and Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley; a screening of The Agreement, a film directed by Raeshem Nijhon; and Global Carbon Pricing Challenge, Driving Global Climate Action, which featured remarks by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Empire was honored to collaborate with the United Nations Office of Partnerships, the United Nations Foundation, Project Everyone, and countless other partners to present the 2023 SDG Pavilion.

SUR Restaurant & Lounge, located in West Hollywood and co-owned by Lisa Vanderpump, an original cast member of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, has been the home base for the show Vanderpump Rules, which has documented the drama stirred up by the restaurant’s gorgeous staff since 2013. Before and after the screening, fans grooved to beats from DJ Dazzler in LA and DJ L3NI in NYC, purchased VPR merch, and shared photos and video on social media. Additional standout moments came when Jax Taylor went behind the Haswell Green’s bar to serve Pumptini! shots, Scheana Shay jumped onstage to sing along to her original song “Good As Gold”, and over at SUR, James Kennedy grabbed the mic and pumped up the crowd before the final reunion episode of Vanderpump Rules’ wild and shocking Season 10.

For the second consecutive year, Empire booked Roy Wood Jr. (from the Daily Show & White House Correspondents Dinner) to host and he kicked off the show with another tech-savvy monologue that addressed the rise of A.I., among other issues.

As always, the Webbys honored a variety of the internet’s best including SZA, Sharon Horgan, Anderson Cooper, Hoda Kotb, Toby Nwigwe & many more. The Webbys are the Internet’s highest honor, and the show is renowned for allowing winners just 5 words for their acceptance speeches. Nevertheless, this year’s winners showed that 5 words is sometimes all you need.

After a roaring round of applause for Webby Artist of the Year SZA, she took the stage and used her 5 words to ironically say “The internet scares me. Thanks!”.

The show also included poignant moments highlighting how the internet helped bring greater attention and continued dialogue to serious social issues such as the killing of George Floyd and the oppression of women in Iran.

Following the show, attendees headed uptown to Marquee for the highly anticipated afterparty where Empire presented DJ Jazzy Jeff to spin and keep the dance floor packed.

Empire produced nearly all aspects of the event from the Red Carpet, the show itself and the after party. Partners this year included Special Guest who led on all things design and Sunshine Sachs who worked to create a buzzy Red Carpet and Media Room.

As part of a unique collaboration with Vietnamese singer Hà Anh Tuấn, Empire delivered the Grammy Award-winning artist Kitaro as the special guest performer for a two-night concert event in Ninh Binh, Vietnam.

In the months prior Kitaro collaborated with Hà Anh Tuấn to rearrange and record five songs for an upcoming digital release. The track list includes Kitaro’s classic songs “Koi” and “Silk Road” with new lyrics written in Vietnamese for the project. The other three songs are hits by Hà Anh Tuấn: “Một Mình Một Sớm Ban Mai”, “Xuân Thì”, “Tháng Tư Là Lời Nói Dối Của Em”. The collection is expected to release globally in mid-2023 with versions in Vietnamese, English, and Japanese.

Nearly 12,000 attendees made pilgrimage to the Hoa Lu Ancient Capital in the beautiful mountainous region of Ninh Binh for Hà Anh Tuấn’s sold-out concert series THE GLORIOUS HORIZON featuring Kitaro’s first-ever show in Vietnam.

Following Hà Anh Tuấn’s performance of Kitaro’s “Koi” & “Silk Road”, a 40-foot high globe rotated 180-degrees to reveal the master himself. Kitaro’s show-stopping performance included his well-known compositions “Aqua” and “Matsuri”, for which he played both synthesizer and taiko drums.

Backed by the 34-piece live band, including the Saigon Pops orchestra, Kitaro also performed his arrangements of the three hit songs by Hà Anh Tuấn. As a final surprise song for Kitaro, Hà Anh Tuấn presented the master’s song “Caravansary” with new Vietnamese lyrics and featuring the rapper Đen Vâu.

As part of his visit to Ninh Binh, Kitaro joined the environmental organization RỪNG VIỆT NAM to unveil a reforestation and wildlife protection project at Cúc Phương National Park. In January 2023, Empire was proud to produce the ceremonies of the 31st World University Games in the historic Herb Brooks Arena, bringing together teams from more than 50 countries centered around the theme of Saving Winter.

The Opening Ceremony began with an ancestral welcome and land acknowledgement by Theresa Bear Fox, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, and Oneida Indian Nation. Following the opening address, the parade of Nations began. The lively parade set to a bespoke musical composition included 1,500 athletes from 50 nations and featured dancers from the Joffrey Ballet School and skaters from the Skating Club of Lake Placid.

Following the parade, Christopher Kinney, a bobsledder who competed in the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, sang a moving rendition of the National Anthem. Welcome speeches were made by Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games Organizing Committee James Mckenna, FISU President Leonz Eder, and New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, who declared the games officially open.

As the lights dimmed, dancers from the Joffrey Ballet School and aerialist Sarah Sporich set the stage for the torch relay featuring Environmentalist Bill McKibben; FISU alumnus and Adirondack Park Commissioner Art Lussi; and Olympians: Jim MIller, Andrew Weibrecht, Mark Grimmette, and Billy Demong.

The creative portion of the show was divided into three segments. The first, Gathering in the Light, featured a diverse group of skaters from American Ice Theatre wearing custom costumes from designer Liz Vandal. Skating cameraman Jordan Cowen captured their modern movements and a quick-change costume element midway through the song. The second segment, Sharing in the Light, was an elegant and moving piece backed by a set piece featuring the mountains of the Adirondacks. Aerialists Angela Kim, & Pawel Walczewski wowed the crowd with their acrobatic feats 40 feet above the ice. The third segment, Celebrating Winter, featured five 40-foot tall kabuki trees native to the region, an uplifting skating performance by American Ice Theatre, punctuated by the daring moves of aerialist Sarah Sporich. At the end of Celebrating Winter, the audience watched as the hydro-electric powered cauldron was lit to signify the start of the Games.

The Closing Ceremony celebrated the 11 days of competition while also paying tribute to Torino, Italy, the host of the next FISU University Games Winter in 2025. The ceremony welcomed back Christopher Kinney to sing the National Anthem. Remarks were made from James McKenna, President of Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games Organizing Committee; Robert Rodriguez, New York Secretary of State; and Leonz Eder, Acting President of the International University Sports Federation. The Mayor of Torino, Stefano Lo Russo, welcomed the world to join him in Torino and introduced Pinguini Tattici Nucleari, an Italian rock band who made their US debut. Theresa Bear Fox and representatives of the Akwesasne Nations returned to close the circle opened 11 days prior, extinguishing the sustainable cauldron and honoring the heritage of this very special area, bringing the ceremonies and Games to a close.

Empire produced the 26th Annual Webby Awards at Cipriani Wall Street in NYC on Monday, May 16, 2022. The full show is available to view now at watch.webbyawards.com

After two years of being a virtual event due to the pandemic, the energy in the room was tangible as the best of the best on the internet gathered to be honored for their work online.

Empire booked Roy Wood Jr. (from the Daily Show with Trevor Noah) to host the show, and his tech-savvy monologue brought the house down.

Winners and presenters at the event this year included Megan Thee Stallion, Ben Stiller, Drew Barrymore, Takashi Murakami, Questlove and many more. The Webbys are considered the Internet’s highest honor, and the show is renowned for allowing winners just 5 words for their acceptance speeches. This year’s winners showed just how powerful and clever so few words can be:

• Professor Anita Hill accepting the Webby Award for her Public Service & Activism, General Series (Podcasts): “Take equality seriously, for real.”

• Adam Scott accepting the Webby Award for Best Actor addressing the recently leaked Supreme Court draft that would overturn Roe v. Wade: “Supreme Court…..eat my shorts”

• Laverne Cox accepting the Advocate of the Year Award: “Transgender. Unstoppable. Beautiful. Belongs. Everywhere.”

• Chef Gordon Ramsay: “No cursing tonight? F*ck me!!!”

Empire was proud to once again have the show feature a stage and set designed by David Korins Design (the creative force behind the scenic design on shows such as Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, and Beetlejuice, as well as the 2022 Academy Awards). Empire produced nearly all aspects of the event, from the Red Carpet, the Media Lounge where winners went for interviews and portraits, and of course the show itself.

Empire is honored to have been chosen to produce every live Webby Awards event since 2005, and we consider the Webby Awards team part of the Empire family.

The reviews are in for this year’s NewFront presentations, and it’s official, Tubi’s NewFront was a hit. MediaVillage’s Simon Applebaum assessed what worked and didn’t work across each presentation, and reported that when it came to Tubi’s, “there was nothing that didn't work."

Tubi, FOX Entertainment’s free ad-supported video on demand service (AVOD), joined dozens of other leading tech and entertainment firms for the triumphant in-person return to the IAB’s biggest annual event series. Empire has worked with FOX’s world-class creative services team for decades, so it was no surprise when they reached out to work with them and the Tubi team to produce their first simultaneous in-person and virtual NewFront event, welcoming 170+ in-person guests plus a dual livestream to an additional audience of 2,000+ media buyers and planners.

The Tubi NewFront began with guests arriving to Manhattan’s West Side to a fully branded experience in the newly opened modern Glasshouse venue. Past a swift check-in, Covid compliance and badging process, guests stepped out of the 6th floor elevator to breathtaking views of the Hudson River through floor-to-ceiling windows. Once inside, guests enjoyed a cocktail experience in a fully Tubi-branded living room environment complete with a series of stations where they could test drive Tubi’s interface and content offerings on iPads and various smart devices. Celebrity DJ and media personality Nick Cannon provided an upbeat soundtrack to the pre-show while the red carpet and step & repeat hosted Tubi’s VIPs.

Guests were then welcomed into a specially created immersive theater to view the stage program which featured both in-person and pre-recorded presenters. Screens surrounded the entire audience, immersing them in the Tubi interface and mimicking the look and functionality of the dynamic platform. As host Vivica A. Fox and a series of Tubi executive speakers appeared, guests were transported into environments representing the breadth and depth of Tubi’s content catalog of over 40,000 films and television series. These environments included riding horses in the wild west with Brad Pitt, romantic walks in Paris and even a world stage soccer game experience with Réal Madrid. The concise 45-minute program with sizzle videos, surround motion graphics, live moments and surprises conveyed to the audience the reason why Tubi is experiencing explosive growth and is positioned for much, much more.

After the stage program and after-party ended, guests were greeted by a Tubi-branded double decker bus to shuttle them to their next destination.

Empire worked closely with Tubi Ad Sales Marketing, FOX Creative Services, Glasshouse, Relish Caterers and many other partners to deliver the program. Empire’s scope of work included overall concept ideation, scripting, screen content and graphics production, technical design and management, stage management and overall logistics.

Empire was extremely proud to collaborate with Tubi on this year’s NewFronts event and looks forward to collaborating with Tubi as they grow for years into the future.

The all-staff webinar featured 10 five-minute talks followed by an engaging Q&A session, hosted at two different times for employees across the globe. Vision 2030 is EDF’s plan for bold climate action in this pivotal decade, reflecting EDF’s mission of “A vital Earth. For everyone.”

EDF staff members spoke on key initiatives covering three broad goals, focusing on places around the world where they can make the most difference in stabilizing the climate, strengthening people’s ability to thrive in a changing climate, and supporting people’s health. The initiatives span a wide range of topics including innovation, transportation, markets, nature, methane, fisheries, agriculture, water, clean air, and chemicals.

Program highlights also featured remarks by EDF’s President Fred Krupp and Executive Director Amanda Leland, who provided context on the Vision 2030 plan. The program gave EDF employees the opportunity to learn about initiatives outside of their own teams, uniting the staff around current achievements and of what’s yet to come to realize Vision 2030.

In April 2022, more than 3,200 of the world’s most engaged social entrepreneurs, social innovators and leaders in finance, philanthropy, academia, government, business, media and the arts community gathered online for the annual Skoll World Forum.

With an opening plenary & awards ceremony and closing plenary session hosted by Femi Oke anchoring the multi-day program, attendees heard from world leaders, activists, and notable voices including Donald Gips, Marla Blow, Samantha Power, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Jonathan Dotan, Jola Mukherjee, Githinji Gitahi, Michelle Bachelet, Alaa Murabit, and Jonas Poher Rasmussen among others – sharing stories and experience to fuel the global audience’s efforts to creating social and environmental impact.

The program also included performances by five-time GRAMMY Award Winner & Founder, Batonga Foundation, Angélique Kidjo, GRAMMY- Nominated Musicians Amadou & Mariam and Playwright, actor, and professor Anna Deavere Smith.

To bring the 2022 Forum’s theme, “Face/ Forward", to life, the Empire and Skoll teams worked hand-in-hand to design and execute the event’s creative motif – using custom animations, curated footage, and creative filming techniques intended to emphasize “a sense of space and place".

A two-day in-person shoot took place in San Francisco, bringing together seven award winners from around the globe for the first time, capturing their in-person interactions, remarks and acceptance speeches, and memories in a custom living room set. One virtual participant, unable to travel from Brazil joined the group live in a unique hybrid appearance.

Working hand in hand with the Skoll team, Empire managed multiple aspects of the session production, including speaker management and briefings, set design, international filming (on-site and remote), budgeting, creative, host preparation, remote recording and video editing.

After months of hard work, problem-solving and preparation, the 10 national finalists pitched their prototypes in front of the panel of esteemed judges at Samsung 837.

Following the Pitch event, the students were treated to private tours throughout NYC, including The Museum of Illusions, a bus trip on The Ride, and a dinner cruise on the Hornblower Lexington, which included a trip under the Brooklyn Bridge, and time spent right in front of the Statue of Liberty.

The next day, the schools were invited back to Samsung 837 for a special brunch and the final reveal event, where the three National Winners were announced. Empire was honored to help produce the Environmental Defense Fund’s (EDF) 2021 Hybrid Staff Retreat on Wednesday, December 1.

The annual Staff Retreat, which is typically held over several days and shared with employees across the globe, gives EDF employees the opportunity to celebrate their achievements from the previous year and for their leadership team to set the tone for what's to come in the upcoming year. This year, Empire was tasked with consolidating a typical several day event into a 3-hour long program that was engaging, informative and celebratory.

The Zoom Webinar, which featured live and pre-recorded remarks, panel discussions and original video content was viewed by over 600 EDFers internationally. Program highlights include remarks by EDF’s President Fred Krupp, Executive Director Amanda Leland and current sitting US Senator Tammy Duckworth. Speakers joined the program both remotely from their homes as well as in-person at EDF’s New York and Washington DC offices, where small, live audiences also participated in the event.

Empire also worked closely with EDF to create three original videos, which highlighted what it is currently like to work at EDF and where employees hope the organization will go in the future. To create these videos, Empire interviewed over 60 EDF employees from across the globe, each of whom answered a standard set of questions. The responses were then cut together to create the videos, titled “A Look Back from 2030,” “How Will We Get There,” and “What It Will Be Like to Work at EDF?”, all of which included the 60 EDF voices across the three videos.

Empire’s scope of work included the development of the program’s run of show, technical production consulting, creative design of the live stream screen graphics, and production and editing of the feature videos.

Empire is a leading producer of events including corporate & non-profit conferences, fundraising galas, experiential marketing engagements, festivals, concerts and more.
